The Emerald Isle is a Federal State Local project done through the ISTEA program. Beaver Island through St. James Township and the Beaver Island Transportation Authority applied for and received grant funds totaling nearly $3,500,000.00 for the construction of the ferry. After a lengthy bidding process the contract was awarded to Washburn and Doughty Associates of East Booth Bay Maine. The Emerald Isle was the 56th hull built by the shipyard. [ MORE ]
After an enormous amount of anticipation and curiosity and its historic voyage home last fall, the Emerald Isle has now started running this spring. Having already carried lots of freight and passengers, the Emerald Isle makes quick work of seas which would daunt other ferries. Passengers enjoy the ship's steadiness, and find the Ferry very comfortable. All of us enjoy exploring the new ship - the interesting entry, the forward and aft cabins, and the upper open lounge - on our way! [ THE VOYAGE HOME ]
Dock Progress continues on Beaver Island. The goal is to provide an efficient docking space for the Emerald Isle on the Island. This involves creating a recessed well for the ship to rest in, as well as the addition of a new enlarged pier. Currently, most of the fill is in place. The steel work is largely finished, and new pilings have been set. We've updated the photos so that you can see the work to date.
